The most common furniture defects found in Vietnam factories fall into three AQL classes. Critical (auto-fail): structural collapse, insect/borer damage, missing safety hardware. Major (likely fail): deep scratches, color mismatch, misaligned drawers, finish peeling, hardware failure. Minor (pass with note): slight color variation, marks on non-visible surfaces. Below is our working defect library with causes and tolerances.
How we classify every defect (ISO 2859-1)
| Class | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | Unsafe, non-functional or non-compliant | Automatic FAIL — shipment hold |
| Major | Clearly visible to the end consumer; reduces value | Likely FAIL — negotiation required |
| Minor | Slight deviation unlikely to be noticed in normal use | PASS with note — concession possible |
Top wood defects — cause & tolerance
Checking / cracking (Critical / Major)
Separation of fibers along the grain from rapid or uneven drying; can progress to full splits in the destination climate. Prevention: pre-production MC% check, target 6–9% for US Midwest / EU.
Warping / bowing (Critical / Major)
Bow, cup, twist or crook from moisture imbalance or poor storage. Tolerance: straightedge check, max ~1mm per 300mm.
Delamination of veneer (Critical / Major)
Veneer separating from substrate due to low glue spread or moisture. Check: tap-test panel edges; verify glue-coverage records.
Insect / borer damage (Critical)
Exit holes from powder-post or longhorn beetle — automatic fail and a customs quarantine risk. Check: ISPM 15 kiln-treatment certificate for all solid wood.
Knots, voids, stain & discoloration (Major / Minor)
Grade-dependent natural defects and fungal/mineral staining. Check: compare to approved material sample under natural and UV light.
Finish, assembly & hardware defects
- Finish: bubbling, peeling, orange-peel texture, runs, uneven sheen, color off vs. approved sample.
- Assembly & joinery: loose or gappy joints, misaligned doors/drawers, inconsistent reveals.
- Hardware: failed hinges or drawer slides, missing fasteners, incorrect or missing anti-tip kit.
- Upholstery: wrong foam density, loose seams, fabric flaws, pattern misalignment.
Moisture content: the silent killer
More solid-wood furniture is rejected for moisture-related cracking on arrival than for any other single cause. Wood must match the destination's equilibrium moisture content before it ships — a check that costs minutes and prevents six-figure claims. See our moisture-content case study.
